"The most valuable learning tool children have is the language they already know."

Patsy Lightbown
Multilingual learners bring a wealth of linguistic knowledge to the classroom, but this is not always visible or deliberately drawn upon in teaching.

This short introductory course will help you understand how learners’ languages can become practical resources for access, participation and learning.

You will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and definitions behind multilingual pedagogies and consider what they can look like in English-medium and bilingual international school settings.

You do not need to speak your learners’ languages to benefit from the course. It is designed for teachers across subjects, age phases and international settings, including those who are new to multilingual education.

There is no assessment or submitted assignment. Instead, reflection activities will help you connect the ideas with your own practice, either independently or through discussion with colleagues.

This micro-course provides an accessible starting point for educators who want to develop their understanding of multilingual pedagogies. It can be taken as a standalone introduction or used as a stepping stone to the more in-depth six-week course, Multilingual Pedagogies (Translanguaging).
